On-Site Wastewater Disposal

While individual septic tank systems for single-family homes are usually designed by county health department staff and installers, larger systems are more complicated, have more governmental regulations, and may or may not be feasible depending on the characteristics of the land planned for development. West Consultants has designed and permitted numerous wastewater systems for churches, schools, campgrounds, parks, summer camps, restaurants and housing developments throughout western North Carolina.

Large septic-tank systems can be especially difficult to plan, permit, and install. The nature of the soil is a critical factor and can “make or break” the feasibility of the land development project. West Consultants works closely with soil scientists early in the planning stages and works with clients to be sure the soil is adequate to support the expected wastewater volume. 

West Consultants also knows how to design and permit alternative subsurface disposal systems, which can make otherwise unsuitable soils suitable for wastewater disposal. Such systems often involve special treatment of the wastewater and different means of dispersing it into the soil. Examples include drip irrigation, peat moss and sand filtration, low pressure pipe (LPP) systems, and flow equalization. Steep, rocky sites are often candidates for such alternative systems.

When subsurface disposal is not an option, West Consultants can design and permit a wastewater system that discharges to a nearby stream or river. While this is usually a last resort and may not be permitted by the State, it sometimes is feasible and is the only option. West Consultants can assist with obtaining an NPDES permit and can design the wastewater treatment system for single-family homes, municipalities, or any land development project in between.
